October 24, 2024: 67th Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council (OARAC) Meeting
The 67th Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council Meeting (OARAC) was held virtually on October 24, 2024. Meeting highlights included the introduction of Geri R. Donenberg, Ph.D. at her first meeting as OAR Director; a presentation by Wesley I. Sundquist, Ph.D., on how NIH-supported fundamental discoveries contributed to the development of an innovative HIV prevention drug, lenacapavir; and updates from OARAC task forces guiding the development of the next HIV strategic plan. October 24-25, 2024: 15th International Workshop on Aging & HIV
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) symposium “Emerging Topics in HIV and Aging Research: Early Career Investigator Spotlight,” was held on October 24, 2024 during the International Workshop on Aging & HIV in Washington, D.C. Organized by the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR) and the National Institute on Mental Health (NIMH), the event highlighted the critical intersection of HIV and aging research, emphasizing the need for innovative, multidisciplinary approaches to improve health outcomes and quality of life for people living with HIV. September 12-15, 2024: United States Conference on HIV/AIDS (USCHA)
OAR joined federal colleagues, researchers, community members, and others at USCHA in New Orleans, LA. OAR, the NIH Tribal Health Research Office (THRO), and the Indian Health Service (IHS), co-hosted a panel and listening session focusing on Tribal health and HIV. OAR leadership also joined federal colleagues for a federal update on HIV programs and taking a syndemic approach. August 27-29, 2024: Global Black Pride Human Rights & Health Conference
OAR participated in the first Global Black Pride Human Rights and Health Summit, which took place during the weeklong Global Black Pride event in Atlanta, GA. The summit focused on issues affecting health, rights, and well-being of Black LGBTQI+ individuals, including health equity and access to HIV services.
August 28-29, 2024: Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA) Meeting
OAR Acting Director Diana Finzi, Ph.D., provided NIH updates from during a session titled, “President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) Implementing Agencies & Other U.S. Global HIV Engagement.” PACHA meetings are open to the public and include an opportunity for public comment.
July 30-31, 2024: African Immigrant Health Research Collaboration Summit (AIHRC)
OAR participated in AIHRC Conference in Boston, MA. The meeting theme was Africanizing the Research Paradigm. OAR participated in the panel conversation “A Panel of National Funders: Opportunities for African Immigrant Health."
July 22-26, 2024: 25th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2024)
OAR joined representatives across NIH at AIDS 2024, the world's largest gathering on HIV, in Munich, Germany. OAR participated in sessions related to HIV and aging, interventions to address HIV-related stigma and discrimination, and challenges and successes in applying global health innovations between low/middle-income countries and high-income countries. June 20, 2024: 66th Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council (OARAC) Meeting
The 66th meeting of OARAC featured updates on the NIH Strategic Plan for HIV and HIV-Related Research; a presentation from Mr. Francisco Ruiz, M.S., new Director of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy; and research updates and community perspectives on perinatal HIV. April 24, 2024: OAR Workshop for Early Career Investigators in HIV

April 12-13, 2024: 14th International Workshop on HIV & Women
This hybrid workshop, sponsored in part by OAR, provided an opportunity for partners to discuss issues, gaps, and opportunities to improve the lives of women with HIV. The workshop was held virtually and in person in Washington, DC. OAR sponsored a symposium, “Breaking the Barriers to the Prevention and Treatment of HIV Among Women,” during the workshop. April 5, 2024: OAR Director’s Seminar
During this event, “The Last Gift Program: Lessons Learned From Altruistic Participants Enrolled in HIV Cure Research at the End of Life,” Sara Gianella Weibel, M.D., discussed her impactful contributions as an early career investigator in HIV across priority areas, such as HIV reservoir, transmission, coinfection, and sex- and gender-related issues, and the continued impact of her research. March 21-22, 2024: NIH HIV & Women Scientific Workshop: Centering the Health of Women in HIV Research
This two-day virtual workshop, co-hosted by OAR and the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health, reviewed the state of the science on HIV and women to inform the future research agenda. Read an OAR Director’s Blog about activities related to HIV and women at NIH.
February 22, 2024: 65th Meeting of the Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council (OARAC)
The 65th meeting of OARAC included updates on the development of the next NIH Strategic Plan for HIV and HIV-Related Research and a request for interested parties to provide input on HIV research priorities. This meeting was the first for Diana Finzi, Ph.D., in her capacity as Acting Associate Director for AIDS Research at NIH and Acting Director of OAR. February 22-23, 2024: African Workshop on HIV & Women 2024
This hybrid workshop, sponsored in part by OAR, provided an opportunity for providers, researchers, government, industry, and community representatives to learn about strategies to reduce HIV transmission and improve the quality of life for women with HIV in Africa. December 1, 2023: NIH World AIDS Day 35 Event
OAR hosted the NIH World AIDS Day 35 Event: Achieving Excellence and Equity in HIV Research. The live event featured updates from the White House Office of National AIDS Policy; a fireside chat to share the NIH perspective on past, present, and future of NIH HIV research; and a panel discussion with research and community experts to explore the topic of equity in HIV research. November 1-2, 2023: NIH Virtual Workshop: Community Voices – Forging the Path Forward for HIV Self-Testing and Personalized Viral Load Monitoring
OAR and the NIH HIV/AIDS Executive Committee (NAEC) gathered HIV researchers, advocates, community organizers, product developers, regulators, and funders to identify needs related to HIV self-testing and viral load-monitoring products. Read the workshop Executive Summary.
October 26, 2023: 64th Meeting of the Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council (OARAC)
