NIH at USCHA 2024

NIH is pleased to join researchers, community members, and other attendees at the U.S. Conference on HIV/AIDS (USCHA) 2024 in New Orleans, LA, from September 12-15. This year’s conference theme, Southern Joy, offers an opportunity to share ways to prevent, treat, and end HIV while honoring the unique cultural and historical landscape of the South.

Meet the Feds: Tribal Health Panel and Listening Session

Read the event executive summary.

HIV has a significant impact on Native communities, and NIH is committed to responding to their needs. OAR and the THRO are working collaboratively with the IHS to align research priorities at the intersection of HIV and Tribal health. Toward this end, OAR, THRO, and IHS will host a two-hour session at USCHA.

This session will include a panel discussion with representatives from across the federal government, followed by a listening session with the audience.

Panel Discussion: Panelists will discuss the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S. (EHE) initiative—a bold plan announced in 2019 that aims to end the HIV epidemic in the United States by 2030—and its impact on Indigenous communities. The panel will provide an overview of each organization’s EHE efforts in Indigenous communities, information on available EHE resources, and a discussion of EHE gaps and opportunities in Indigenous communities.

Listening Session: Listening sessions serve as platforms to gather diversified input on HIV research priorities from partners including academia, public health agencies, community-based organizations, and advocacy groups, including people with lived experience. This input helps ensure that NIH HIV research priorities are informed by community needs.

For USCHA attendees with an interest in Tribal health, this year’s conference agenda also includes sessions on topics such as Native storytelling as resilience, Indigenous community engagement, and Indigenous research. Find a list of event times and locations compiled by IHS.
