  • February 27, 2024: The Lancet HIV Highlights HIV and Women Signature Program at NIH
    A new position paper, published February 26 in The Lancet HIV, outlines a framework for an intersectional, equity-informed, data-driven approach to research on HIV and women, the cornerstone of the HIV and Women Signature Program at NIH.
  • February 13, 2024: OAR Issues Request for Information on HIV Research Priorities
    OAR has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to inform development of the FY 2026‒2030 NIH Strategic Plan for HIV and HIV-Related Research. We seek feedback from all interested parties—including researchers, health care professionals, advocates and health advocacy organizations, scientific or professional organizations, public health officials, government agencies, and community members. Respond by March 28, 2024.
  • December 21, 2023: New Release: NIH OAR HIV Partner Outreach & Engagement Report
    OAR is proud to share the third serial report that summarizes input from the latest round of OAR-hosted listening sessions. The NIH OAR HIV Partner Outreach and Engagement Report: August 2021 to December 2022 summarizes findings from sessions in Texas, Puerto Rico, the 2021 and 2022 US Conference on HIV/AIDS, and the 2022 National Council of Urban Indian Health Annual Conference and highlights some of the ways that input is informing the NIH HIV research program.
  • December 18, 2023: OAR Update on Leadership Transition
    Effective December 17, 2023, Diana Finzi, Ph.D., will serve as NIH Acting Associate Director for AIDS Research and Acting Director of the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR) while a nationwide search for a new director continues. Bill G. Kapogiannis, M.D., transitioned from his role as NIH Acting Associate Director for AIDS Research and Acting Director of OAR to a new role in the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) within the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
  • December 1, 2023: NIH Statement on World AIDS Day 2023: By Bill G. Kapogiannis, M.D., and Jeanne Marrazzo, M.D., M.P.H.
    On the 35th anniversary of the first World AIDS Day observance, NIH joins its partners in honoring the lives lost due to the HIV pandemic and committing to the urgent work that remains to end HIV and AIDS for all.
  • November 13, 2023: Highlights: October 2023 NIH Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council (OARAC) Meeting 
    The 64th meeting of the OARAC featured an update from OAR on how health disparities are shaping the NIH HIV research program, partner presentations, and a panel highlighting NIH perspectives on the role of syndemic models in HIV health disparities research.
  • August 1, 2023: Highlights: June 2023 NIH Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council (OARAC) Meeting
    The 63rd meeting of the OARAC featured extensive discussion on HIV and women, the launch of the new NIH OAR Data Hub, updates on the HIV clinical practice guidelines, and other highlights from OAR and its partners.
  • May 18, 2023: NIH Statement on HIV Vaccine Awareness Day 2023
    May 18, 2023 marked the 26th observance of HIV Vaccine Awareness Day. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) applauded the efforts of the collaborative global community of scientists, advocates, study participants and staff, and funders enabling unprecedented levels of innovation and adaptation in the pursuit of a highly effective HIV vaccine.
  • March 24, 2023: OAR Update on Director Transition
    Effective March 26, 2023, Maureen M. Goodenow, Ph.D., transitioned from her role as NIH Associate Director for AIDS Research and Director of the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR) to a new role as Senior Advisor in the NIH Office of the Director. Bill G. Kapogiannis, M.D., FIDSA, an NIH leader in HIV research for nearly 18 years, now serves as NIH Acting Associate Director of AIDS Research and Acting Director of OAR while a nationwide search for a new director is conducted.
  • January 31, 2023: Update to Clinical Guidelines for Infant Feeding Supports Shared Decision Making: Clarifying Breastfeeding Guidance for People with HIV
    U.S. Department of Health and Human Services HIV clinical practice guidelines now incorporate breastfeeding options for people with HIV on antiretroviral therapy with sustained undetectable viral load (levels of virus in the blood).
  • December 1, 2022: NIH Statement on World AIDS Day 2022: By Anthony S. Fauci, M.D. & Maureen M. Goodenow, Ph.D.
    In the 34 years since the first observance of World AIDS Day, transformational progress has been made in the global fight against HIV/AIDS, yet challenges remain.
  • August 26, 2022: White House Publishes Federal Implementation Plan for National HIV/AIDS Strategy
    The new National HIV/AIDS Strategy Federal Implementation Plan reflects the collaborative work of representatives from 10 federal departments and details more than 380 action items they will implement individually and collaboratively. This plan documents federal agencies’ commitments to programs, policies, research, and other activities needed to meet the goals of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS). These critical activities, which encompass work to be done in fiscal years 2022–2025, will move our indicators of progress in the right directions.
  • August 26, 2022: 2022 DEBUT Challenge Winners Announced
    NIH announced the winners of the 11th annual Design by Biomedical Undergraduate Teams (DEBUT) Challenge with prizes totaling $130,000. NIH and VentureWell named nine winning teams and five honorable mentions that designed technology solutions to unmet health care needs, including a faster and cheaper way of testing for one of the leading causes of death among people with HIV.
  • August 11, 2022: Remembering Dr. Neal Nathanson, Former Director of the NIH Office of AIDS Research
    The NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR) was deeply saddened by the loss of former OAR Director, Neal Nathanson, M.D. The HIV community and larger medical community lost a scientific pioneer and renowned epidemiologist.
