Julio Aliberti, Ph.D

Julio Aliberti, Ph.D. is a Senior Science Advisor and the acting leader of the OAR Science Team at the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR). In this role, he leads the OAR team that provides technical and scientific expertise in support of OAR’s efforts to shape NIH HIV research priorities and coordinate HIV research across the agency.

An immunologist by training, Dr. Aliberti joined OAR in February 2022. In addition to his current role leading the OAR Science Team, his portfolio includes topical expertise in the fields of HIV vaccine research, HIV and cancer, co-infections in people with HIV, and the impact of climate change on HIV care.

Dr. Aliberti brought to OAR more than two decades of experience in HIV research and immunology. He held several positions at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, including as a program officer for extramural research focused on discovery of new vaccines and immunotherapeutics against infectious diseases; a scientific review officer for immunology-related research proposals; and a post-doctoral fellowship focused on induction and regulation of immune responses to infection, including those involving proteins that play a key role in HIV infection (C-C chemokine receptor type 5, or CCR5). His previous roles also include faculty positions at Duke University’s Department of Immunology and the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Division of Molecular Immunology.

Dr. Aliberti holds an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Basic and Applied Immunology from the University of São Paulo, Brazil.
